Jenna Faye Powell
Jenna Faye Powell is an artist and writer based in Toronto, Ontario. She self-identifies as an optimist with a deep interest in intersections between art, environmentalism, and ideas that enact social change. Powell’s practice explores ideas of sanctuary and survival in the face of increasing, concurrent disasters, including environmental collapse. Her work looks at how eco-anxiety commingles with individual fears, and leans on fiction and cinematic-tropes as a light-hearted respite from reality. Her recent works envision what part ‘future us’ might play in the sci-fi story of our not-so distant future.
Powell has attained an MFA degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (2012), as well as a BFA degree from the University of Western Ontario (2009). She has exhibited nationally and internationally in various solo and group shows, as well as participated in notable residencies at Vermont Studio Centre, SÍM Residency Centre (Iceland), and Annandale Artist Residency. Selected exhibits include Brave New Worlds at Museum London, the Windsor-Essex Triennial at the Art Gallery of Windsor, and Blue Monday at Robert McLaughlin Gallery. Powell was a finalist in the 2012 RBC Painting Competition. She currently works for Partners in Art Canada.
