Kara Springer

Born in Barbados, Kara Springer lives and works in Toronto and New York. Her practice is particularly concerned with armature – the underlying structure that holds the flesh of a body in place. She uses photography, sculpture, and site-specific interventions to confront and engage with architecture, urban infrastructure, and systems of institutional and political power. Springer holds degrees from the University of Toronto, OCAD University, ENSCI les Ateliers in Paris, and the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto), Artists Space (New York), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), the National Gallery of the Bahamas, the National Gallery of Jamaica, and the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts. She is an alum of the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art and recently held a 2 year fellowship with the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Née à la Barbade, Kara Springer vit et travaille à Toronto et à New York. Dans le cadre de sa pratique, elle s’intéresse particulièrement à l’armature, la structure sous-jacente qui maintient la chair d’un corps en place. Elle utilise la photographie, la sculpture et des interventions in situ pour confronter et interagir avec l’architecture, l’infrastructure urbaine et les systèmes de pouvoir institutionnels et politiques. Springer est diplômée de l’Université de Toronto, de l’OCAD University, de l’ENSCI – Les Ateliers à Paris et de la Tyler School of Art de la Temple University. Son travail a été exposé au Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto), à Artists Space (New York), à l’Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphie), à la National Gallery of the Bahamas (Nassau), à la National Gallery of Jamaica (Kingston) et au Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts. Elle a déjà participé au programme d’études indépendantes du Whitney Museum of American Art et a récemment reçu une bourse de deux ans dans le cadre du programme Core du Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
